  From August 27-30, USTB hosted the 15th International Conference on Intelligent Unmanned Systems (ICIUS 2019). It was attended by Academician Chai Tianyou from Northeastern University, Academician C. L. Philip Chen from South China University of Technology, Academician Xu Lei of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and more than 150 experts from 17 countries. The topics of the conference included AI, intelligent unmanned systems, and robots. USTB attendees included Xue Qingguo, Deputy Party Secretary and Vice President, Zheng Anyang, Director of the Party Office and School Office, Sun Jinghong, Director of Human Resources, Lin Lin, Director of the Development Planning Department, Yao Zhihao, Deputy Dean of the Graduate School, Zhang Zhaohui, Dean of the School of Automation, and Chen Hongwei, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages. The Conference was hosted by He Wei, the Vice President of the School of Automation.  

  

  At the opening ceremony Xue Qingguo delivered the welcoming speech. He spoke of how while USTB continues to maintain its dominance in the field of metallurgy, it is also becoming well-known for its work in intelligent unmanned systems and AI. He continued that the gathering was a good place for exchange among the assembled scholars, and that the conference would help to strengthen USTB’s continuing work and broaden its network of connections.

  

  The conference invited experts including Professor Chai Tianyou from Northeastern University, Academician of the European Academy of Sciences, Professor C. L. Philip Chen from South China University of Technology, Academician of the European Academy of Sciences, Professor Xu Lei of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, IEEE Fellow, Professor I-Ming Chen of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, Professor Kenzo Nonami, Chiba University, Japan, Professor Kwang-Joon Yoon of Konkuk University in South Korea, and six others to deliver reports. They detailed their research in the field of unmanned robots and AI for various tasks including industrial and amphibious work.

  

  The conference was jointly hosted by the International Society of Intelligent Unmanned Systems and USTB. It was organized by the IEEE SMC Beijing Capital Region Chapter, the Chinese Association of Automation. Professor He Wei served as the chairman of the conference. The International Conference on Intelligent Unmanned Systems received a total of 143 submissions for presentations, with 102 being reviewed and accepted.

  

  The event provided an important platform for the sharing of research and achievements in the field of AI and unmanned systems. It further acted as a meeting point for USTB scholars to interface with other international experts. ICIUS 2019 served as an important step for USTB realizing its goal of becoming a “double first-class” university with China.
