Spotlight on USTB-DMU CI

The University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) - De Montfort University (DMU) Confucius Institute was officially established in March 2014. With support of the Hanban and other parties, USTB helped to jointly found the Confucius Institute with DMU for the purpose of bringing Chinese culture and language to the Leicester-based university. Since then the USTB-DMU Confucius Institute has established 24 learning sites throughout Leicester, reaching over 3200 students of varying ages, and providing for-credit courses for 452 DMU students.

Located centrally on the DMU campus, the Confucius Institute offers a number of activities to students and local Leicester residents:

  • Cultural activities including t’ai chi lessons, instruction in Chinese tea ceremony, dance, film, and celebration of Chinese festivals including Spring Festival.
  • For-credit and non-credit courses in Mandarin Chinese language.
  • A fun place for community members to learn more about China!

Representatives from USTB, DMU, the Confucius Institute and the Hanban regularly meet to assess the Institute’s work and determine how it might be improved to better reach more people. At the same time, the Institute has evolved to match USTB’s strengths in science and technology and has created coursework to emphasize creative technology development. Over the years the Confucius Institute’s activities have continued to grow, and USTB looks forward to seeing even more students be introduced to Chinese culture and language in the coming years.
