History of the Confucius Institute

The first Confucius Institute was opened in 2004, and since then hundred more have opened up around the world in dozens of countries. Overseen by the Hanban (Office of Chinese Language Council International), the Confucius Institute often works in partnership with local academic institutions to provide education in Mandarin Chinese language, Chinese culture, and facilitating cultural exchanges between host country nationals and Chinese nationals. Institutes typically provide both for-credit Chinese language courses to university students, as well as informal lessons to those interested in learning to speak Mandarin Chinese.
