Material Service Safety International Joint Research Center aims to utilize global high-tech resources to serve the demands of the development strategy of China. It conducts the engineering materials research related to scale, environment, time and safety assessment methods. The joint research center will promote the basic research and independent innovation abilities of China in the field of materials service safety, and ensure the reliability and feasibility of Materials Safety Assessments Facilities (MSAF). Meanwell, the joint research center is capable of building new knowledge systems, disseminating new knowledge and cultivating innovative talents, promoting the substantial transformation of scientific and technological achievements and will play a leading role in the innovation and development of materials service safety .In the past five years, with the goal of building a world-class international research institution, the joint research center has focused on both innovation and personnel training, which has achieved substantial achievements in international cooperation as follows:
Construct platform for international joint research—National Center for Materials Service Safety (NCMS) make a global cooperation with world-wide famous institutes, universities and laboratories, including Tohoku university, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Ford company successively. As a result, several joint research Labs/Centers which are Joint High-Temperature High-Pressure research laboratory, Collaboration Center for the Genome of Engineering Materials, Advanced Traffic Material Joint Laboratory and Integrated Engineering Materials Joint Research Center were set up respectively. NCMS also has signed long-term cooperation agreements with the institute of material testing, university of Stuttgart, Germany, and the institute of material research, Japan, respectively, to carry out cooperation in the fields of large metal component testing, material creep fatigue and database. It plays an important role in developing China's independent engineering material service performance data system. In 2013, NCMS was granted The Materials Service Safety International Cooperation Base of Beijing.
Introduce high-end foreign experts to center—Based on long-term cooperation, NCMS introduced high-end foreign experts by a flexible way of combination of short-term and long-term visiting. Achievements were reached in the facility design and construction, as well as the expert lectures, graduate courses, joint education of graduated students. In 2012, it was approved as Overseas Expertise Introduction Center for Discipline Innovation on Engineering Materials Service Safety (111 project) by the ministry of education.
Cooperation research-- At present, the professors of has carried out substantive joint research project with the researchers from other countries. The cooperation topics mainly cover the failure mechanism of high temperature structure material and data collection, the metal corrosion, transportation materials research and evaluation, material friction failure. More than bilateral cooperation 20 projects have been activated and four related books have been in planning.
Conferences and lectures –In the past few years, NCMS organized domestic and foreign academic conferences, lectures and forums including the fifth International Workshop on Risk-based Engineering, Workshop on Multiphase Flow Corrosion In Oil and Gasfields et al. More than 150 international experts have been invited for lectures, giving courses and academic exchanges. NCMS played an active role in introducing international advanced intelligence resources and improving the research level of service safety in China.
Internationalization education & training – NCMS supports the young scholars to conduct international cooperation in a variety of forms every year. A number of graduate students have been encouraged to study abroad for a short term. Some students are recommended to purse Ph.D degrees in foreign countries. NCMS have reached a mutual recognition agreement on 2 + 2 PhD joint training with KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and a joint degree awarding system on graduate student training with University of Michigan.
