USTB Hosts First International Symposium on Intelligent Theory and Applications of Corrosion and Protection of Materials and Forum on the Development of the Discipline Toward 2035

From May 23 to 24, to explore the frontier development of materials corrosion and protection in the new era of data-driven and AI-enabled research, the First International Symposium on Intelligent Theory and Applications of Corrosion and Protection of Materials and the Forum on the Development of the Discipline Toward 2035 were held at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB).

The event was jointly organized by USTB, the National Science Data Center for Corrosion and Protection, and the Chinese Society for Corrosion and Protection, bringing Together Global Expertise. The symposium focused on cutting-edge advances and innovative applications of artificial intelligence in corrosion mechanism research, the development of corrosion-resistant materials, and corrosion engineering.


More than 150 experts, scholars, industry representatives, and graduate students from universities, research institutions, and enterprises across 18 countries, including China, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Egypt, and Nigeria, attended the event. LU Xiaopeng, Director of the Beijing International Exchange Center; JIAO Shuqiang, Vice President of USTB; and representatives from relevant university departments participated in the conference. The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor ZHANG Dawei, Director of the Office of International Affairs.

In his opening remarks, JIAO Shuqiang noted that materials corrosion and protection are entering a period of unprecedented development opportunities amid the global transition toward sustainable energy systems and green, low-carbon development. He emphasized that the conference would help strengthen international academic cooperation, promote interdisciplinary integration, advance innovation in fundamental theories, and support major engineering projects worldwide. GAO Yunnan, President of the Institute of Corrosion in the United Kingdom, and LI Xiaogang, Director of the National Science Data Center for Corrosion and Protection, also delivered welcome addresses.


Exploring AI-Driven Solutions for Corrosion Science, fourteen distinguished academicians and scholars from China and abroad, including Academician CHENG Yufeng and Professor Mikhail Zheludkevich, delivered keynote presentations on a wide range of frontier topics, including pipeline corrosion control, corrosion in electronic systems, atomic-scale characterization techniques, and the development of corrosion inhibitors and protective coatings.

During the conference, the Symposium on the Development of Corrosion and Protection Discipline Toward 2035 was held. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on major achievements and scientific breakthroughs in the field of corrosion, as well as the opportunities and challenges facing the future development of the discipline. Broad consensus was reached on a range of topics, including talent cultivation and international cooperation.


The conference not only provided a high-level international platform for academic exchange among leading experts in corrosion and protection, but also highlighted the discipline’s transition into a new era of intelligent development. Through the exchange of ideas and constructive discussions, the event is expected to further promote the integration of artificial intelligence with corrosion science and protection technologies, inject new momentum into disciplinary development, and create new opportunities for innovation and collaboration.
