On August 29, University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) held its 2025 Opening Ceremony at the university stadium, welcoming a new cohort of undergraduate, graduate, and international students.WU Guilong, Secretary of the CPC USTB Committee; YANG Renshu, President of USTB; LYU Zhaoping, Vice President; SUN Jinghong, Deputy Secretary of the CPC USTB Committee; ZHANG Dalin, Deputy Secretary of the CPC USTB Committee and Secretary of the Commission for Discipline Inspection; Vice Presidents ZHENG Anyang, ZHANG Weidong, WANG Luning, JIAO Shuqiang, and PENG Qinghong; as well as WANG Xia, Assistant President of USTB and Vice President of the University of Jinan (on temporary assignment), attended the ceremony together with representatives from university departments, campuses, schools, and graduate training units.
A total of 3,616 undergraduate students, 5,171 graduate students, and 514 international graduate students from 74 countries joined the ceremony, which was also livestreamed online. The event was hosted by WANG Luning.

USTB places great emphasis on the educational significance of ceremonial events, integrating motivational education, gratitude education, and the University’s distinctive culture into the student experience.Prior to the formal ceremony, current students and incoming freshmen presented musical performances that showcased the vitality and enthusiasm of USTB students while expressing heartfelt gratitude to teachers and parents.

During the flag-awarding ceremony, WU Guilong presented the University flag to student representatives, while leaders from 30 academic schools awarded school flags to representatives of the new students.The ceremony symbolized the continuation of USTB’s proud traditions and the enduring spirit of the steel industry that has been passed down through generations of students. Members of the Class of 2025 were encouraged to uphold the University motto, “Seeking Truth and Pursuing Innovation,” and contribute to China’s modernization with determination, responsibility, and youthful vigor.
The ceremony officially commenced with the national anthem of the People’s Republic of China.

HE Jinhao Speaking on Behalf of Current Students
Student and Faculty Representatives Share Their Expectations.HE Jinhao, a member of the UniversityStudent Union Presidium,spoke on behalf of current students. He encouraged the incoming students to think independently, embrace responsibility, and strive for excellence. He urged them to carry forward USTB’s proud traditions, strengthen their resilience, and write their own chapter in the University’s history.

Professor LI Chengming Speaking on Behalf of Faculty Advisors
Professor LI Chengming from the Institute for Advanced Materials and Technology delivered remarks on behalf of the faculty. Drawing on his three decades of research in diamond materials and his contributions to China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, he encouraged students to remain passionate, capable, and determined throughout their academic journeys. He urged them to stay true to their aspirations and develop into responsible and accomplished members of society.

President YANG Renshu Deliversakeynote speech titled “Taking Responsibility and Embarking on a New Journey in a New Era,” YANG Renshu reflected on USTB’s more than 70 years of educational tradition and mission, sharing three expectations for the incoming students.
First, he encouraged students to cultivate strong ideals and a deep sense of commitment to the nation. By sharing stories of distinguished former professors, including KE Jun, XIAO Jimei, and TONG Guangxu, he highlighted the importance of aligning personal aspirations with national needs and realizing one’s value through service to society.
Second, he called on students to strengthen their abilities through diligent study and innovation. Using examples of USTB alumni who transformed entrepreneurial ideas into industry-leading achievements, he encouraged students to embody the University motto, confront challenges with courage, and pursue excellence through integrity, perseverance, and creativity.
Third, he emphasized the importance of developing moral character. Drawing on stories of student volunteers and service teams working in rural communities, he encouraged students to uphold USTB’s tradition of rigorous scholarship and practical engagement, contribute to society through service, and broaden their perspectives through cooperation and inclusiveness.
Concluding his speech, YANG expressed his hope that students would pursue excellence, deepen their knowledge, embrace the world with open minds, and grow into talented individuals capable of contributing to national development and social progress.

Following the ceremony, WANG Luning delivered the “First Lesson of the New Semester” to all incoming graduate students under the theme “Serving the Nation and Building the Future.”The lecture introduced USTB’s graduate education system and provided guidance on academic planning, future career development, research ethics, and academic integrity. The session encouraged new graduate students to uphold innovation, pursue excellence, and move forward with confidence in their studies and future careers.
