XING Gang, born on January 16, 1976, is of Han ethnicity and a member of the Communist Party of China. He holds a bachelor’s degree and currently serves as Head of the Industrial Control Network Section in the Maintenance Department of the Coal Chemical Division at Baotou Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. (Baogang), where he is also recognized as a Senior Technician. He is a member of the USTB Class of 2000 in Computer Science.
In 2012, the “XING Gang Electrical Skills Master Studio” was established and later upgraded to a regional-level master studio in Inner Mongolia in 2014, before being recognized as a national-level master studio in 2017. Over the years, both XING Gang and his studio have received numerous honors, including the National May 1 Labor Medal (2018) and the title of National Model Worker (2020).
From Frontline Worker to Master Technician
From an ordinary worker to a senior electrical technician and leader of a national-level skills studio, XING Gang has remained dedicated to his post for over two decades. Since beginning his career in the 1990s, he has consistently upheld the spirit of craftsmanship—striving for precision, excellence, and continuous improvement.
Despite receiving numerous accolades, XING remains humble, often emphasizing that he has simply “done his job with honesty and dedication.” As he once put it:“Only by maintaining a sense of respect and caution in one’s work, and by focusing on both the big picture and the smallest details, can true achievement be realized.”
Solving Complex Technical Challenges
XING Gang is widely recognized for his ability to tackle complex electrical equipment issues on the production line.
In June 2016, during the summer heat, two out of four refrigeration units in a key production area suddenly failed, threatening normal operations. At a critical moment, XING led his team to overcome technical barriers by independently programming the DCS control system and implementing 12 equipment modifications.
Working continuously for seven days alongside his colleagues, he oversaw every stage—from program design and parameter configuration to system commissioning and operation. His meticulous approach and solid technical expertise ensured the successful restoration of the system. Cases like this are common in his career, where he has repeatedly demonstrated exceptional problem-solving capabilities.
Early in his career, XING faced the challenge of mastering complex electrical systems. Determined to overcome the gap between theory and practice, he devoted himself to studying technical drawings, learning from experienced workers, and gaining hands-on experience. Within six months, he had fully mastered the wagon tippler system—laying a strong foundation for his future growth.
From 1995 to 2003, he further advanced his education by completing both a diploma in Electrical Automation and a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Technology, graduating with outstanding performance.
Driving Innovation and Creating Value
After becoming a team leader in 2003, XING Gang initiated the establishment of the first “Electrician Learning Room” at the plant, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and skill development. Under his leadership, the team achieved national recognition as an “Outstanding Team” in the machinery and metallurgy industry.
Throughout his career, XING has led or participated in over 100 technical innovations and equipment upgrades, generating more than RMB 3 million in economic benefits for the enterprise. His contributions to projects such as PLC system upgrades and equipment modifications have received multiple awards.
Cultivating Talent and Passing on Skills
Believing that collective strength far exceeds individual ability, XING has devoted significant effort to talent development. Since the establishment of his skills master studio in 2012, he has led extensive training programs, totaling over 270 hours and benefiting more than 5,000 participants.
He has personally contributed dozens of training hours and mentored a group of apprentices, many of whom have gone on to achieve professional advancement and success in competitions. Several trainees have been promoted to technician-level positions or recognized within professional technical systems.
To his apprentices, XING is both a strict mentor and a caring guide. As one of his students noted:“He is extremely rigorous and attentive. When we face difficult problems, his presence gives us confidence. I am proud to be part of this studio and will continue striving to follow his example.”
Innovation Rooted in Practice
Under XING’s leadership, the studio continues to grow and innovate. One of its recent research initiatives focuses on “precision timing control of street lighting based on big data.” While seemingly simple, such innovations can significantly improve safety, energy efficiency, and operational convenience.
As XING explains, even small improvements—such as automatically adjusting lighting schedules based on daylight—can bring substantial benefits to frontline workers and reduce unnecessary labor. His approach reflects a philosophy of innovation that is practical, flexible, and impactful.
Through decades of dedication, XING Gang has embodied the spirit of craftsmanship—pursuing excellence, embracing innovation, and contributing selflessly. His work not only advances industrial development but also inspires a new generation of skilled professionals to carry forward the values of precision, responsibility, and perseverance.
