Congratulations to 17 Experts on Being Elected as IUSBSE Fellow

From December 11thto 15th, 2020, the 11th World Biomaterials Congress was held online. At the opening ceremony, Professors CHEN Hong, FAN Yubo, FU Xiaobing, JIANG Xiqun, LIU Xuanyong, QIN ling, TANG Benzhong, TIAN Weidong, WANG Changyong, WANG Jun, WANG Yunbing, WENG Jie, YIN Jinghua, YU Zhentao, ZHANG Kai, ZHENG Yufeng and ZHENG Yudong of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUSBSE) won the lifetime honorary title of "Biomaterials Science and Engineering Fellow" of IUSBSE. The outstanding academic achievements made by these experts in the field of biomaterials science and engineering were highly appraised.

The IUSBSE is a body that brings together national and multi-national groups dedicated to the advancement of biomaterials, surgical implants, prosthetics, artificial organs, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. It currently includes members from Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, South America and The United States of America. It was formerly known as the International Liaison Committee of Societies for Biomaterials (ILC) in 1980. In 1998, it passed the new regulations and officially registered "International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering" in the U.S.A.. Its mission is monitoring of progress in organization of World Biomaterials Congresses ensuring scientific excellence and designation of fellows, biomaterials science and engineering.

Prof. CHEN Hong, Suzhou University

Citation: Professor Chen’s research focuses on biomaterials and biointerfaces, establishing several widely applicable, highly efficient methods for surface functionalization, investigating protein interactions on material surfaces via quantitative methods, and developing a series of novel antithrombotic materials with thrombus-responsive fibrinolytic capability for applications in blood-contacting systems and devices.

Prof. FAN Yubo, Beihang University

Citation: Prof. Fan pursued outstanding research on the biomechanics and mechanobiology between the implant/intervention-body and the host tissue, and influence of mechanical loads on degradation of the biodegradable biomaterials and implants. He devotes outstanding contributions to promote the BME Education, development of medical device industry, and the BME community in China.

Prof. FU Xiaobing, Academy of Life Sciences, PLA General Hospital, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering

Citation: Professor Fu is a pioneer in the world to research and apply of growth factors for burns and trauma management in clinic. He is the first in the world to realize the regeneration of sweat gland using stem cells and biomaterials in human. He plays a key role in making the national plans for stem cells, biomaterials and regenerative medicines.

Prof. JIANG Xiqun, Nanjing University

Citation: Prof. Jiang has established a universal method for preparing biopolymer nanocarriers and developed high tumor targeting and penetrating drug delivery systems, in particular, boronic acid-rich nanomedicines and poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)-b-poly(ε-caprolactone) drug delivery systems. Furthermore, he has designed a series of hypoxia-specific ultrasensitive macromolecular probes for early detection of tumors and cancer metastasis.

Prof. LIU Xuanyong, Fellow of Hanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Citation: Prof. Xuanyong Liu has developed some novel bioactive and antibacterial coatings/films for applications in orthopedics and dentistry fields. He has also proposed the associated mechanism for improving the bioactivity, biocompatibility and antibacterial ability of implants, especially in balancing the antibacterial and osteogenic effects of implants.

Prof. QIN Ling, Chinese University of Hong Kong

Citation: Dr. Qin has been working on advanced diagnosis and treatment of bone disorders, in collaboration with material scientists and engineers to develop innovative orthopaedic implants and devices. Dr. Qin is also the pioneer to establish joint biomedical program in Hong Kong that has been the foundation for becoming AIMBE and ICORS fellow.

Prof. TANG Benzhong, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, South China University of Technology, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Citation: Prof. Tang coined the concept of aggregation-induced emission (AIE), which overturns the general belief of aggregation-caused quenching of traditional fluorophores and spearheads the AIE research worldwide. The AIE luminogens have been widely applied in the fields of biosensors, bioimaging and diagnosis, and show distinct advantages over traditional fluorophores.

Prof. TIAN Weidong, West China School of Stomatology Sichuan University

Citation: For pioneering work to develop the bio-root (treated dentin matrix) for tooth regeneration, application of electrospining, 3D bioprinting and cell-laden microfluidic techniques for oral tissue regeneration, achievements in surface modification, implant design and equipment development for dental implantology.

Prof. WANG Changyong, Institute of Military Cognition and Brain Science, Academy of Military Medical Sciences

Citation: The applicant invented a series of biological materials with microenvironment regulation function and obvious therapeutic effect in repair of vital organs(ACS Nano, et al).He used ES-CMs, iPSC-CMs to reconstitute ECTs in vitro for the first time (Circulation, 2006), and made breakthroughs in the regeneration of lung, kidney and uterus.

Prof. WANG Jun, South China University of Technology

Citation: Dr. Wang has been committed to biomaterials for over 25 years. His prominent contributions to the biomaterial community include: 1) developing novel synthetic strategies for biodegradable polyphosphoesters; 2) proposing the concept of tumor-acidity activatable nanomedicles based on 2,3-dimethymaleic amide chemistry; 3) conceiving cationic lipid assisted nanoparticles for nucleic acid delivery.

Prof. WANG Yunbing, Sichuan University

Citation: Prof. Wang is globally renowned for the leading contributions in developing biomaterial based minimally invasive medical devices for cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. With more than 150 patents granted in the United States and Europe, he took the lead to develop several world-first medical devices.

Prof. WENG Jie, Southwest Jiaotong University

Citation: Established the relationship between osteoinduction of hydroxyapatite scaffolds and their multilevel structure, determined the materials factors which influence the stability of plasma-sprayed calcium phosphate coatings, modified porous scaffolds with micro-/nano-structure and synthesized microspheres of calcium phosphate with surface texture, determined the role of micro-/nano-structure in the biological behavior, etc.

Prof. YIN Jing Hua, Fellow of Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Citation: He invented thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) for infusion device, promoting the transition of infusion device from using plasticized polyvinyl chloride to Non-plasticizer TPE. He developed irradiation-resistant medical polymers, accelerating the transition of medical device from using ethylene oxide sterilization to irradiation sterilization in China. He invented thermo-sensitive polymer and the related surface modification technique, thus solved the safety challenges of the indwelling and interventional devices.

Prof. YU Zhentao, Northwest Institute for Non-ferrous Metal Research

Citation: He and his team developed three novel high strength and low modulus beta Ti alloys (TLM, TLE,Ti-B12) and dental implants, spinal internal fixation, orthodontic wire etc. He established three R&D platforms.

Prof. ZHANG Kai, Sichuan University

Citation: For outstanding contributions to developing and commercializing innovative orthopedic devices and leadership in coordinating Chinese-American collaborations in biomaterials field.

Prof. ZHENG Yufeng, Peking University

Citation: For leading contributions in developing new metallic biomaterials for applications in orthopedics, dentistry and interventional therapy. He was the main contributor to the first terminology “Biodegradable Metals” and its classification, and as a pioneer designed novel biodegradable metals with nutrient elements, such as patented Mg-Ca and Zn-Sr alloys.

Prof. ZHENG Yudong, University of Science and Technology Beijing

Citation:Prof. Zheng has achieved Outstanding achievements on biocomposites for regeneration of skin, cartilage and nerve , winning the national and provincial-level incentives awards, published over 80 papers,obtained over 30 national invention patents and CFDA certificates. She made a contribution in biomaterials in China as a council member or vice chairman of Chinese society of biomaterials and branchs, as well as take charge of the international conferences and exchange .

For working on biocomposites for regeneration of skin, cartilage and nerve for a long time. As a project leader, she has undertaken and completed over 30 research projects including China national or provincial and international joint projects. She has published over 120 papers, obtained over 30 national invention patents. Several achievements have been successfully put into industrial and medical applications and she has achieved the national and provincial-level rewards. Meanwhile she served as the council member of Chinese society of biomaterials and vice chairman of biocomposites branches, as well as a Member of Medical Device Classification Committee and evaluation expert of CFDA, and so on.
