Dr. Majid Khan - a Member of USTB Foreign Faculty Received Research Fund for International Scientists (RFIS)

Recently, Dr. Majid Khan, a member of USTB foreign faculty received the Research Fund for International Scientists (RFIS) awarded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). The research award accounts for 200,000 RMB per year. The RFIS is a highly competitive research fund set up by the National Natural Science Foundation of China to support international scientists with foreign citizenship working in China. This fund aims at conducting cutting-edge research work and also enhancing the long-term, sustainable academic collaboration, and exchange between Chinese and International Scientists.

Dr. Majid Khan is working as the full-time Foreign Faculty at the School of Civil and Resource Engineering, University of Science and Technology Beijing since June 2020. He also obtained Excellent International Postdoctoral Fellowship (High-Talent Introduction Program) worth 600, 000 RMB (2020―2022). He obtained his PhD degree in Geophysics from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. His research direction includes Applied and Exploration Geophysics, Safety Science, Mechanism of geological disasters in underground engineering, and geology. He has published over 35 research articles in highly reputed international journals and acting as the editor and reviewer as well. He has been representing USTB in several live TV shows to support Science and Technology development and strengthening China―Pakistan bilateral relationship.

His project entitled “A novel study on coupling mechanism of induced-seismicity and complex geological deformations in deep mines” focuses on introducing a novel geophysical approach to study the coupling mechanism of induced-seismicity and complex geological deformations in Chinese deep mines. The proposed approach uses microearthquake events to model the entire fracturing process in three-dimensions, to identify new geological changes, to predict movement along existing geological faults in deep mines, and to provide large-scale geological disasters prediction and prevention. The proposed novel approach is cost-effective and efficient to solve the most challenging problems in deep mining. Dr. Khan expects that this project will provide strong basis for the future intelligent mining in China.
