On the morning of October 14th, 2021, USTB successfully held the Experience Exchange Meeting on International Students Education with the theme of “USTB Phonograph-Here Comes the Tutors” in the Academic Conference Hall (ACH). Prof. NING Huansheng, Associate Dean of the School of Computer and Communication Engineering, was invited to deliver a report on international student education and cultivation experience. The Meeting was attended by Associate Deans of foreign affairs, teacher representatives and international student representatives of relevant schools, and presided over by Mr. ZHANG Hu, Associate Head of the International Student Center.
Prof. NING first introduced the ways and procedures of receiving international students, and combined with the cultivation process of international student Fadi, the winner of the 15th President's Award, as an example, he shared in detail his deep experience in guiding and cultivating international students for many years. He pointed out that the teaching and cultivation of international students is a long-term process, which also requires tutors to integrate their personal feelings and expectations. International students have different backgrounds and foundations before coming to China for study. Therefore, the training objectives and future international cooperation should be fully considered in the guidance, and the future development direction of international students should be organically combined with the actual work of the laboratory. During the study, like Chinese students, we should also support and create opportunities for international students to participate in more social practice activities and provide communication platform for international students to see, to hear, and to experience by themselves, so as to promote them to have a more objective and comprehensive understanding of China's development. After graduation, in order to give full play to international student alumni resources, we should encourage international students to maintain good connection with their tutors, further promote in-depth cooperation, and carry out sustainable international talents training. In the cultivation of international students, it is necessary to step out of the role of tutor, adhere to the concept of building a Global Community of Shared Future, and cultivate international students into outstanding global talents who build bridges between China and foreign countries.
During the exchange session, Ms. CAO Yanqiu, Associate Dean of the School of Chemistry and Biological Engineering, discussed with Prof. NING on how to improve the integration of Chinese and international students in the laboratory. Prof. NING suggested that tutors should make full use of the weekly group meeting to provide a more relaxed and a warmer atmosphere for Chinese and international students to share their daily life and views on hot issues and enhance mutual understanding. At the same time, it can also give full play to the language advantages of international students, encourage Chinese students to communicate more with international students, and practice their oral communication skills. Prof. NING also answered the questions raised by the on-site international students one by one.
Mr. ZHANG Hu said that Prof. NING’s experience sharing was vivid, detailed, and profound, which not only made all the tutors attending the meeting have a more perceptual understanding of the ways to bea teacher, but also makes everyone have a more in-depth rational thinking on how to cultivate international talents. In the future, the International Student Center will continue to do a good job in coordination and provide a good communication platform and information exchange platform for the International Student Center, training units, tutors and international students.
The series of activities of "USTB Phonograph" is an important measure taken by the International Student Center to thoroughly implement the spirit of President Xi Jinping's reply letter to all Pakistani international students, and to present a gift to the 70th anniversary of USTB. Two series of activities have been successfully held so far, which plays an important role in promoting the development of international study in China for our university.
