USTB Organizes 22nd “Sing for May Fourth” Competition

On the evening of May 4th, the 22nd “Sing for May Fourth” singing competition was held simultaneously on the online karaoke platform ‘WeSing’ and the video platform ‘Bilibili’. May 4th marks China's Youth Day and honors the memory of the May Fourth Movement. On such a special day, about 10 thousand students and teachers gathered online to watch the singing contest and show respect for the heroes in the fight against COVID-19.

“Beautiful voices on May Fourth, Glorious Deeds during the Pandemic” was the theme of this year’s competition. Ms. SHI Wei from the Humanistic Quality Education Center, USTB, Mr. ZHENG Kaiduo, tenorist from the China National Traditional Orchestra, Ms. MA Jinrui, soprano from the Southern Song and Dance Troupe, and Ms. WANG Junyao, a musical actress and model attended the contest as judges.

This year’s contest attracted more than 400 students to participate. After two rounds of competition, a total of 16 contestants stood out from the rest and won a chance to sing in the finals.

The final contest kicked off with stunning vocal harmonies from sixteen contestants, who came from different corners of China, followed by the song  The World Wakes Up For You (世界为你醒来) written for the fight against the coronavirus epidemic and the theme song of the I Love My Song  (吾爱吾歌) contest.

In the first round of the finals, sixteen singers gave full play to their strengths by singing songs about youth. The top 10 singers moved on to the second round. In the end, LI Siyuan, CHU Zhongzhu and YANG Yinpan won the first, second and third prizes, respectively, while HU Chenyu won the "most popular” award during pre-contest voting.

As a cultural icon of USTB and an opportunity for our students to show their talents, energy and personalities, the “Sing for May Fourth” singing competition has always been very popular among students and teachers. During this pandemic period, it carried the spirit of the May Fourth Movement and showed respect to heroes of the fight against COVID-19.
