USTB Achieved Good Performance in the 14th National University Student Social Practice and Science Contest

The 14th National University Student Social Practice and Science Contest on Energy Saving & Emission Reduction was held online on August 27th. Five entries of USTB were awarded the first prize, including Ultra-water-saving Excrement and Urine Separation Toilet Based on Eccentric Groove Wheel Structure, Integrated Smart Faucet Based on Independent Energy Supply, Distance Control and Water Treatment, An Integrated Device for Pupa and Dung Separation Based on Mealworm Degrading Agricultural Mulching Film, High-value utilization Device for High- temperature Oil Extraction and Sterilization of Kitchen Waste to Produce Insect Feed, Cascade Dung Carbonization by Using Ship Waste Heat Device. Seven entries were awarded the third prize. USTB won the Outstanding Organization Award again, for the 14th consecutive years.

The National University Student Social Practice and Science Contest on Energy Saving & Emission Reduction was hosted by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education (MOE). It is an important measure taken by the Ministry of Education to implement the National Action Plan for Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction, and it is also an important part of MOE’s Action Plan for Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction in Schools. The competition fully embodies the theme of "energy saving, emission reduction, green energy", closely centering on the national energy and environmental policies, and closely integrating the major national needs. Under the direct leadership of MOE and the active collaboration of major colleges and universities, the characteristics of running competitions with a high starting point, large scale, many fine products and wide coverage have been formed. It has become an oriented, demonstrative and mass-oriented national college student competition, and it is one of the most influential annual extracurricular practice activities for students across the country.

A total of 514 colleges and universities from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions participated in the competition. A total of 5,201 works were received since the launch of the competition in March. After expert evaluation, 1,035 works were awarded the third prize. 244 works from 110 colleges and universities including Tsinghua University (THU), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (STU), Zhejiang University (ZJU) and USTB entered the final, the number of works and participants that entered the final reached a new record high.

In this competition, 15 teams of USTB won 5 first prize and 7 third prize. All the finalists won the first prize. To cope with the requirement of the COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control, the final adopted the combination of online and offline evaluation method. Participants centered on their projects and conducted defenses online, their work were shown in the online exhibition hall, and experts conducted offline evaluation.
