On August 31^st, the opening ceremony for the Class of 2024 undergraduate students was held in the USTB Gymnasium. Committee of USTB, Prof. WANG Luning, Vice President of USTB, Prof. HUANG Wunan, Vice President of USTB, Prof. PENG Qinhong, Vice President of USTB, as well as heads of relevant functional departments and colleges, attended the ceremony. More than 3,500 undergraduates of the Class of 2024 and some parents of the new students participated in the ceremony. The ceremony was simultaneously broadcast live on the Internet, and Prof. YU Chengwen presided over the ceremony.

Gratitude Session

USTB attaches great importance to the nurturing function of the ceremony, carefully designing and organically integrating the elements of ideals and beliefs, thanksgiving and motivation, and school culture. In the warm-up session before the official start of the ceremony, representatives of freshmen and current students showed the vigorous youthfulness of USTB students with loud songs and melodies. Representatives of freshmen presented flowers to representatives of parents and secondary school teachers to express their sincere gratitude.

Fourteen leaders of the colleges of USTB gave the representatives of freshmen badges and flags, expressing their sincere wishes. The new students of the Class of 2024 completed the entrance ceremony and started their new journey in USTB.

DING Shaojie, President of the Student Union of USTB, delivered his speech on behalf of current students. ZHOU Caiqiao delivered a speech on behalf of freshmen

ZHOU Caiqiao, who delivered her speech on behalf of freshmen, is from the School of Mathematics and Physics of USTB. She shared her story of entering USTB under the influence of the atmosphere of serving the country with industry in her hometown and the inspiration of the steel spirit of USTB.

Prof. WANG Haijuan delivered a speech on behalf of undergraduate tutors

Prof. WANG Haijuan from the School of Metallurgical and Ecological Engineering of USTB, on behalf of undergraduate tutors, delivered her speech. She combined her learning and working experience in USTB for more than 20 years to encourage all freshmen to adhere to the academic first, to be honest, and trustworthy to make an effective college plan, to cultivate the comprehensive ability, to cherish the friendship between teachers and students, grasp the platform opportunity, spend a full, rich, high-quality college life.

Alumni representative Mr. CUI Peng delivered a speech

Mr. CUI Peng, alumnus of Computer Science 2001, long-time associate professor, and doctoral tutor of Tsinghua University, selected by the National High-level Talent Plan and winner of the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, gave a heartfelt sharing. Combined with his own learning and working experience, he hoped that all the freshmen would find their inner love, make unremitting efforts and breakthroughs, closely link their personal growth with the country's destiny, and contribute to the self-reliance and self-improvement of China's science and technology.

2024 undergraduate military skills training will start after the opening ceremony. USTB has set up the 2024 undergraduate military training corps to give full play to the effectiveness of military training. Prof. YANG Renshu delivered a speech

Prof. YANG Renshu delivered a passionate speech. He combined the USTB's development history and outstanding achievements around the topic of ‘what is great love and how to cultivate,’ putting forward three points of hope to the freshmen. First, great love is rooted in the iron and steel conviction to serve the country. He hoped that students would integrate personal ideals into the country's construction, the great practice of national rejuvenation, and work together to strive for a better China. Second, great love is rooted in the dedication to the pursuit of knowledge. He hoped that students would not be afraid of hard work and continue to improve their knowledge and skills. Third, great love is rooted in the broad mind. He hoped that students would pay more attention to the world’s affairs and contribute to the construction of a Community with a Shared Future. Finally, he encouraged all the freshmen to strive to grow into a ‘steel boy’ or an ‘iron girl’ of the new era, who deserves other’s respect and can make contributions to society.
