On October 27th, the 2023 Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GARS) was officially released, covering 55 disciplines involving five fields: science, engineering, life sciences, medicine, and social sciences. By 2023, the metallurgical engineering discipline of USTB has been ranked first in the world for six consecutive years, becoming a leader in the industry.
Among the 2023 GARS ranking, a total of 333 universities from the Chinese mainland have been listed, with a total of 3,390 times, second only to the United States. 15 of them ranked first in the world; They are Mechanical Engineering (Xi 'an Jiaotong University), Communication Engineering (Xidian University), Instrument Science (Harbin Institute of Technology), Civil Engineering (Tongji University), Nanoscience and Technology (University of Science and Technology of China), Energy Science and Engineering (Tsinghua University), Water Resources Engineering (Hohai University), Food Science and Engineering (Jiangnan University), and aerospace Engineering (Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics), Ship and Ocean Engineering (Shanghai Jiaotong University), Transportation Engineering (Beijing Jiaotong University), Remote Sensing Technology (Wuhan University), Mining Engineering (Central South University), Metallurgical Engineering (University of Science and Technology Beijing) and Textile Science and Engineering (Donghua University).
The Metallurgical Engineering major of USTB was established in 1952 by the metallurgical disciplines of Tianjin University, Tsinghua University, and six other universities. It is one of the characteristics and advantages of USTB. It is a national first-class key discipline and has been selected as a world-class discipline. It has been selected as a world-class discipline construction and has maintained a leading position in the discipline evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 2004, 2009, 2012, 2017, and 2022.
It is one of the first Ph.D. programs in the country, a postdoctoral mobile station, a national key discipline, a dominant discipline of "211 Project" and "985 Project" and a key construction discipline of "2011 Innovation Platform". It is the first major of the national "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" and has passed the national engineering professional certification twice. It is a major of the mutual recognition of degrees of the parties to the "Washington Accord” and was awarded the first "National first-class undergraduate major" in 2019. Metallurgical engineering is a national specialty of higher education approved by the Ministry of Education, known as the "Cradle of Iron and Steel Engineering."
There are 144 full-time faculty members in the metallurgical engineering discipline, including 77 professors and 37 associate professors, including 2 academicians and more than 10 national high-level outstanding talents. It has a "HUANG Danian teaching-style team" of the Ministry of Education, a national excellent teaching team for " Physical Chemistry of Metallurgy," and a national first-class teaching team for " Iron and Steel Metallurgy. "
57% of the full-time teachers have working experience in enterprises, design institutes, and the front line of engineering, and more than 90% of the teachers have doctoral degrees and overseas study or training experience. They not only have profound attainments in academic research but also have rich experience in engineering practice and can combine the most cutting-edge theoretical knowledge with practical application to provide all-round guidance and education for students.
The discipline of metallurgical engineering emphasizes the cultivation of professional talents. The School of Metallurgical and Ecological Engineering offers full-time undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs covering various fields of metallurgical engineering, such as Physical Chemistry of Metallurgy, Principles and Processes of Metallurgy, and Metallurgical Materials Science and Engineering. Each undergraduate is assigned a tutor to guide the students through their academic growth.
This major carries out the project of "Through-cultivation programs from undergraduate to graduate studies" By the end of the fourth semester, students whose comprehensive scores rank in the top 40% of their major can be granted the qualification of postgraduate recommendation and complete the six-year training mode of undergraduate and postgraduate education. It also carries out the "metallurgy plus" training model and supports elective courses in metallurgy + information, new energy, energy conservation, and environmental protection.

After more than 70 years of construction and development, the discipline of metallurgy in our university has become a first-class discipline with outstanding characteristics, leading in China and well-known in the world, and is constantly moving towards the goal of establishing a "world-class metallurgical education and research center."
