Since the Reform and Opening-up, USTB has cultivated a large number of metal casting professionals and made outstanding contributions to the development of the metal casting field. Many alumni have worked in important positions in well-known universities, research institutions, and enterprises at home and abroad. Recently, Prof. DONG Hongbiao, an alumnus from the class of 1985, was elected an academician of The Royal Academy of Engineering (UK).

To celebrate the election of Prof. DONG Hongbiao as an academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering, review the outstanding contributions of the alumni in the field of metal casting, and strengthen the contacts and exchanges between the alumni, the "Advanced Solidification Technology Forum" was held online on October 1^st, sponsored by Professor ZHAI Qijie, the former director of the Metal Casting Research Office and the Director of the Metal Casting Research Institute. Prof. WANG Luning, Vice President of USTB, and nearly 60 alumni of the metal casting major attended the Forum.

Prof. WANG Luning, on behalf of USTB, congratulated Prof. DONG Hongbiao on his election as an academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering and fully recognized the outstanding achievements of our alumni of the metal casting major. At the same time, he thanked everyone for participating in the Forum, especially Professor ZHAI Qijie’s organization of this forum. Prof. WANG Luning hopes that all the alumni of the metal casting major will continue to support the development of USTB.

While warmly congratulating Prof. DONG Hongbiao on his election as an academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Mr. LIU Guoji, an alumnus from the class of 1984 and President of the Metal Casting Alumni Association, reviewed the profound friendship between our Alumni of metal casting major and said that he would further play the role of the Alumni Association, strengthen the relationship between the alumni and USTB, and make contributions to the development of his alma mater.

Ten alumni who had worked in the USTB Metal Casting Teaching and Research Office introduced their professional work experience, achievements, and experiences around relevant topics in this forum. The excellent reports and cutting-edge research achievements of the alumni created a high-level banquet in the field of metal casting for the participants, which aroused strong repercussions.

Mr. WANG Minzhong, Deputy Director of the Learning Committee of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and the former Secretary General of the Party Committee at the USTB Department of Metallurgy, made a concluding speech. Mr. WANG Minzhong, the former class advisor of Prof. DONG Hongbiao, expressed his joy at the achievements that have been made by his former student. He reviewed Prof. DONG Hongbiao's hard work and excellent achievements during his study, affirmed the significance of this forum, and hoped to hold more similar forums in the future.

The planned two-hour forum lasted for three and a half hours. It was late at night, and the participants were still in high spirits and reluctant to leave.
