On the afternoon of September 23^rd, the Student Symposium for the 2022 Fall Semester was held in conference room 306 of the Administration Building. Prof. YANG Renshu, President of USTB, Prof. SUN Jinghong, Vice Chancellor of USTB, and the heads of the Party Office, the University Office, the Office of Epidemic Prevention and Control, Department of Student Affairs, Communist Youth League Committee, Department of Academic Affairs, Graduate School, Department of Admissions and Career Services, Department of Facilities and Maintenance Management, Office of Information Technology and other departments attended the meeting and held discussions with the student representatives from various schools and graduate training units. Mr. WANG Haibo, Associate Head of the Department of Student Affairs, presided over this forum.

At the symposium, student representatives spoke freely, they successively gave their own opinions on domestic and international hot topics and plans for the new semester, etc. JI Yuchen, a 2020 undergraduate from the School of Civil and Resources Engineering, reflected the difficulties in learning and living under the situation of normalized epidemic prevention and control. He hoped our university could pay more attention and help in students’ studies, scientific research, mental health, employment guidance, and basic living allowance. QIN Jining, a 2022 undergraduate from the School of Mechanical Engineering, said that it was his dream to become a student of USTB. As a class monitor in the university, there are many differences compared with the work in high school. In the future, he will strive to unite his classmates and handle the relationship between personal learning and work. YANG Yongtian, a 2019 undergraduate from the School of Energy and Environmental Engineering, said that he will make good plans in the new semester, focus on the all-round development, make an overall plan for course learning, volunteer services, course design, etc. and constantly strive to improve his personal ability. LIU Yang, a 2022 graduate student of the Institute of Engineering and Technology, shared the guidance and care given by his undergraduate tutor in professional learning, career planning, extracurricular activities, and other aspects during his undergraduate study at USTB. He hoped that there could be more in-depth communication with his supervisor during his graduate study. As the representatives of students' rights and interests, HUA Hui, the executive chairwoman of the Student Union, and LIANG Tengyue, the member of the Presidium of the Postgraduate Student Union, reflected the issues regarding campus network, campus cultural life, and other problems that students care about.

In the interactive communication session, school leaders and the heads of relevant departments had more in-depth communication with the participating students, answered and responded to the questions and suggestions raised by students, and said that they would continue to provide comprehensive services and guarantees to protect the study and life of students and help them to develop and become talents.

Prof. SUN Jinghong expressed his appreciation to the students for their commitment and responsibility. He said that the school will accept the suggestions and opinions of the students and implement them in action. He also raised three expectations for students. First, we should jointly abide by the epidemic prevention and control regulations. At present, the epidemic prevention and control situation at home and abroad is still serious and complex. He hopes that students will support and understand the epidemic prevention and control work of the school and jointly comply with the epidemic prevention and control requirements of Beijing universities. Second, we should pay more attention to our own personal development. Under the situation of normalized epidemic prevention and control, he hoped that students could adjust their mindset, make full use of online and offline learning resources, create a strong learning atmosphere, and write a new chapter in the new semester. The third is to maintain good communication with the university. He hoped that students could give feedback on their difficulties and suggestions in learning and life to the university in a reasonable and orderly manner, and all departments would effectively solve the problems to ensure the healthy growth and development of students.

Prof. YANG Renshu listened to the student representatives and fully affirmed their good spiritual characters. He exchanged with the participating students about four major events in the development of the school. First, study the spirit of President XI Jinping’s reply to all Pakistani students in USTB and to the senior professors of USTB. The two replies from President XI Jinping reflected the great importance attached by the CPC Central Committee with XI Jinping as its core to higher education and the educational development of USTB. He hoped that students should keep firmly in mind President XI’s ardent expectations and strive to become high-caliber talents with high ideals, professional competence, and strong will to serve the country, who remain true to the Party. Second, strictly implement epidemic prevention and control work. In the face of the epidemic situation, the Party and the government always adhere to the principle of "put people in the first place". He hopes that students should fully understand, support, and attach great importance to the epidemic prevention and control work, and work together to build a strong epidemic prevention and control network on our campus. Third, promote the talent cultivation task. USTB will adhere to the school-running idea of becoming "high-quality, specialization, and internationalization," and comprehensively help students grow and become talents through the undergraduate Full-course Advisor System, “ bachelor-to-master " cultivation, and other measures. Fourth, build the USTB Xiong'an New Campus. Students from USTB jointly participated in the voting on the design scheme of the USTB Xiong'an Campus. The construction of the new campus is a dream for many generations of USTBers, which will promote the high-quality development of discipline construction, specialty construction, and team construction of our university. Finally, on behalf of USTB, Prof. YANG Renshu thanked the students’ support and cooperation in all aspects of the school's work. He hopes that students could objectively reflect on the problems and help our university to solve the problems in a better way. He encouraged the students to seize the day and live it to the fullest, work hard, and make new and greater contributions to building China into a strong country in science, technology, and manufacturing.
