On 14 July 2020, USTB-DMU Confucius Institute (CI) was commended as one of the 20 Best Overseas Confucius Institutes for Organization of the First World-wide "Creative Mandarin Teaching Videos Contest Marking the UN Chinese Language Day" held by ChinesePlus & CTI (Chinese Testing International).
Pic 1 - The shortlist
Three videos contributed by the CI were shortlisted by experts from among 1210 videos from Confucius Institutes across the world. They were shown on YouTube to collect views from the public.
Pic 2 - Winners of Best Overseas CI for Organization
The first one by Yi YU is a unique combination of the art of paper folding with teaching Mandarin sentence patterns. The second video by Wenjing LAI offers students a glimpse of the pictographic Chinese characters as well as the evolution of a particular character. Yinghua ZHU’s video focuses on the teaching of a linguistic structure “either…or…” with vivid cartoons and sentence samples to facilitate students learning.

The “UN Chinese Language Day" was established by the UN Department of Public Information in 2010 on or around Gu Yu or Grain Rain (Rainfall is helpful to grain), one of the 24 solar terms of the traditional Chinese calendar to commemorate Cangjie, the legendary creator of Chinese characters.
Pic 4 - Shortlisted Video on a Sentence Pattern by ZHU Yinghua
The three-month long “Chinese Language Day Creative Videos Contest” started in mid-April. Thousands of Mandarin learners and teachers participated in the event against the inconveniences caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
