Prof. Andries Meijerink, a Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Gave a Lecture at the School of Materials Science and Engineering

On March 28th, the Academic Salon for teachers and students from the School of Materials Science and Engineering was held in the conference room of the Main Building. Professor Andries Meijerink, Academician of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, was a guest of the salon. Prof. SUN Lingdong from the School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering of Peking University, Prof. ZHONG Haizheng from the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Beijing Institute of Technology, and Prof. LIU Quanlin, Associate Professor SONG Zhen and Associate Professor KANG Yuetong from the School of Materials Science and Engineering of USTB attended the event, which was presided over by Prof. LIU Quanlin.

Prof. Andries Meijerink gave a lecture on the theme of " Multi-Photon Phosphors". He introduced the development and transformation of lanthanide-doped luminescent materials in the past 40 years: from lighting to display to sensing and detection, the footprint of rare earth luminescent materials has been all over the field of artificial light sources, and is still expanding to more and more novel research directions. Based on the basic knowledge of luminescence and according to different types of luminescence, Prof. Andries Meijerink described the theory, research, and application of up-conversion, down-conversion, and down-transfer phosphors respectively, and introduced representative research results of their team in detail.

After the lecutre, Prof. Andries Meijerink had a warm interaction with the teachers and students and gave vivid and detailed answers to the questions raised by them. His report explained profound theories in a simple language, not only did it broaden the international horizon of teachers and students from our school in the field of materials, but also it provided new ideas for the scientific research work.

The guest speaker Prof. Andries Meijerink is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and an adjunct professor at Lanzhou University. He received his master's and doctoral degrees in the field of Chemistry from Utrecht University and returned to Utrecht in 1991 after completing postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research output is extensive, including more than 380 scientific publications and 10 patents, and has been widely cited. He has received numerous awards for his research work, Shell Incentive Award in 1995, the Royal Netherlands Society of Chemistry Gold Medal in 1999 and 2005, the Electrochemical Society Centennial Award for Fluorescence and Display Materials in 2002, the American Chemical Society Award for Inorganic Chemistry in 2016, Gels Holst Medal of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences in 2019, and ICL Prize in 2020. His current research mainly focuses on spectroscopic studies of lanthanide ions in different host materials and their applications in lighting and solar cells.

The Academic Salon for teachers and students of Materials is one of the important activities for the academic exchange and study style construction of graduate students from the School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE). Every year, the salon invites professors and experts with outstanding and representative achievements in corresponding research fields or research directions inside and outside the school to share and exchange the latest research progress and cutting-edge knowledge of materials science for teachers and students.
