Dr. Wee Ka Siong, President of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) Led a Delegation to USTB for Communication and Exchange

On June 12th, Dr. Wee Ka Siong, President of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) and former Minister of Transport led a delegation to visit USTB. Prof. WU Guilong, Chancellor of USTB met with the delegation in the meeting room of the school library. The two sides had a discussion meeting, and the meeting was presided over by Prof. LYU Zhaoping, Vice President of USTB. At the meeting, USTB and Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) signed a memorandum of cooperation.

Mr. WU Guilong expressed his warm welcome to the first visit of the delegation of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA). He said that USTB has always been committed to promoting high-quality opening up, and in November last year, our delegation visited Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), and other schools. He pointed out that this meeting will further strengthen the cooperation between USTB and Malaysian institutions of higher education in teaching, research, and student exchange, jointly cultivating excellent talents with international vision, and promoting the integration and development of Chinese and Malaysian higher education.

Dr. Wee Ka Siong introduced the history of the MCA and its contributions to the promotion of Malaysia-China friendship, especially in the field of higher education, as well as a detailed description of the three universities constructed by MCA. He pointed out that as the first organization in Malaysia to respond to “the Belt and Road”, MCA has been always encouraging more people from different classes of the Chinese community in Malaysia to actively participate in the construction of the "Belt and Road" Initiative and to set up the MCA Belt and Road Centre, which enables Malaysia to play a greater leading role in ASEAN countries.

Subsequently, the representatives of the two sides carried out in-depth discussions on topics such as educational cooperation, scientific research cooperation, and academic exchanges. Prof. LYU Zhaoping and Dr. Lee Sze Wei, President of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) signed the memorandum of cooperation on behalf of the two universities. The signing of this memorandum of cooperation is one of the initiatives of USTB to respond actively to the “Belt and Road” proposal and deepen exchanges in the field of higher education with the countries along the “Belt and Road”, which may lay the solid foundation for USTB to share teaching and research experiences with the countries along the “Belt and Road” and to seek more opportunities for international development. At the end of the discussion, Mr. WU Guilong, on behalf of USTB, exchanged souvenirs with Dr. Wee Ka Siong.

This year is the "Year of Internalization" of USTB, based on this cooperation, USTB will seize the historical opportunity to enhance the teaching, scientific research, and internalization of USTB and also provide intellectual support for the construction of the “Belt and Road” through regular exchanges in science and technology and people-to-people exchanges with Malaysia and other countries along the “Belt and Road”, as well as the establishment of the high-tech cooperation platform for the “Belt and Road”.

Relevant representatives from the Department of Public Affairs and Communications, Department of United Front Work, Office of International Affairs, International Student Center, School of Civil and Resources Engineering, School of Metallurgical and Ecological Engineering, and School of Materials Science and Engineering of USTB attended the meeting.
