The 2019 Education of International Students Seminar was held on December 18th, 2019, in order to implement the spirit of the National Education Conference on Foreign Affairs and promote the development of the education of international students in USTB. Prof. XUE Qingguo, Vice Chancellor and Vice President of USTB, attended the event and delivered a speech.
Prof. XUE spoke of USTB’s achievements in the education of international students, and indicated the necessity and urgency to improve their education in line with the university’s “double first-class” construction efforts. He stressed that internationalization is an inevitable trend in the building of world-class universities, and attracting outstanding international students to come study is a reflection of successfully developing world-class disciplines. He continued saying that it is of vital importance to firmly establish the concept of quality first, and clarify the responsibilities of the university’s departments, teaching units and personnel training units in accordance with the guidelines of “The Higher Education Quality Standard for Overseas Students in China” as issued by the Ministry of Education. Furthermore, taking into account the different characteristics of undergraduate and graduate education, USTB should strengthen the education and cultivation of international students and constantly promote the quality and efficiency of their education.
Mr. ZHAO Baoyong, Director of the International Student Center, introduced USTB’s approach to the education of international students from six aspects: its historical evolution, management structure, progressive development, working practices, challenges encountered and its future work plan. He also explained how USTB had worked to shape its program to adhere to “The Higher Education Quality Standard for Overseas Students in China” guidelines.
Prof. FAN Xiaohua, Associate Dean of the Donlinks School of Economics and Management, and Assoc. Prof. MA Hongzhi, School of Energy and Environmental Engineering, shared their experiences in training and managing international students. They also discussed challenges they had encountered in the process.
Issues regarding the assessment of international students enrollment examinations, training standards, daily management and usage of funds were also discussed during the seminar.
