"From April to November, I came to Wukesong Arena twice to participate in the 'Meet in Beijing' activity, although the positions are different, the feelings are similar. I learned a lot of Olympic-related business knowledge here, and I got to know many lovely teachers and students here. I am honored to participate in the Winter Olympics and grateful to USTB for the volunteer opportunity." Mr. Zhang Jiakuo, a 2018 undergraduate student volunteer, shared his experience with teachers and fellow volunteers at the wrap-up meeting of the "Meet in Beijing" hockey domestic test event.
The Winter Olympics is the highest-level event of winter sports and has an enormous influence in the field of international sports. Hosting the Winter Olympics will help elevate China’s international standing in an all-round way. As the university responsible for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Wukesong Arena, USTB, under the coordination of the Beijing Organizing Committee for 2022 Olympic Winter Games, has actively participated in the preparation for the Wukesong Arena’s "Meet in Beijing" ice hockey test activity. In this test activity, USTB selected a total of 94 teachers and students to participate in 12 different fields, such as volunteers, event services, sports, etc. As an important part of the venue operation team, USTB volunteers accumulated more than 5,000 volunteer hours. Among them, 46 teachers and students overcame the obstacles and successfully completed their volunteer work under the more stringent epidemic prevention measures in the closed-loop management area.
"Meet Beijing" hockey domestic test event in Wukesong Arena is the last full element rehearsal before the Winter Olympic Games, and the standard of each work is the same as the official competition, which is important for the overall promotion of the Winter Olympic Games. In order to better guarantee the testing activities, USTB and the relevant departments of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee have visited each other for many times to research and exchange in-depth work plans. Under the overall guidance of USTB, the Safety and Surveillance Section, the Communist Youth League Committee and other relevant departments focused on the following three aspects:
First, focus on nurturing talents with the opportunity of testing activities. USTB held rich activities to inspire students to participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics as volunteers. The participation of the whole process in the "Meet in Beijing" activity is helpful to cultivate students' awareness of youth responsibility and enhance their patriotism and honor of the school.
Second, pay full attention to the talent selection and training mechanism. The Winter Olympic Games is a systematic work, volunteers need to have a high comprehensive quality and solid business knowledge. The school fully researched during the volunteer selection stage and took students' coursework, physical fitness, abilities, and strengths into account to form a strong volunteer team and conducted the general and the professional training before this testing activity to comprehensively enhance the professionalism of Winter Olympics volunteers.
Third, makes every effort to meet the needs of volunteers' work, study, and living. The Winter Olympic Games are characterized by low indoor temperature, high intensity, and high service standards, which put forward higher requirements on the volunteers' psychological quality and physical strength. The school paid full attention to the humanistic care for the volunteers participating in the service, bought down jackets, down vests, and other warm equipment for them, and coordinated with relevant departments to guarantee the living needs such as catering and transportation. Besides, the school also properly arranged the academic problems for volunteers to solve their worries about participating in the service. Moreover, Wukesong Arena has also set up a "volunteer home" and an "energy station" to facilitate the student and faculty volunteers and arranged for full-time teachers to carry out their mental health activities to make the arena full of the warmth of the school.
USTB has a long and glorious tradition in the field of volunteer service. Since the successful bid for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, Olympic sentiment has been taking root in this school, for which USTB has always listed the work related to the Winter Olympics as a key task and set up a leading group for volunteer service for the Winter Olympics. The leading group coordinated the participation of all schools and departments within USTB, and up to now, more than 5000 people has signed up for the Winter Olympics, forming a strong atmosphere of "full attention and active participation" in the school.
