Collaborative Innovation Center of Steel Technology

Collaborative Innovation Center of Steel Technology(CICST) was established by USTB and Northeastern University as its core, jointly with Baosteel, Anshan Steel, Wuhan Steel, Shougang Group, China Iron & Steel Research Institute Group, Institute of Metal Research of CAS, Shanghai University and Wuhan University of Science and Technology. In 2014, CICST was successfully included in the national "2011 plan". Facing at urgent needs of green transformation for the steel industry, CICST is concentrated on developing innovative technologies and equipment to achieve resource-saving, energy-saving, emission-reduction and environmental friendly steel production. Moreover, CICST will explore advanced technology of material design, molten steel cleanliness, quality assurance, etc. to develop materials which are needed in engineering of marine, transportation, energy and other strategic emerging industries of green development. The targets of CICST are: 1) Leading the development of key-common technologies and advanced products of steel; 2) Becoming the most important industry base to cultivate innovative talents and the transformation platform of the achievements in scientific research; 3)Strengthening international cooperation and frontier exploration, reaching the top level of the world in the basic research of steel. In 2018, CICST successfully passed the evaluation by the Ministry of Education of China.

Main research areas

1. Basic Research of Steel

Research on advanced technologies of high performance steel in the material design. Breaking through theories and methods of steels with component simplification, organization elaboration, molten steel cleanliness, quality homogenization. Providing frontier exploration and theoretical supports for the research and development of technologies, equipments and high-end products.

2. Marine Engineering Steel

Research on new steel materials for marine facilities manufacturing industry and other major national construction projects, to meet the requirements that the national offshore platform, offshore facilities, bridges, special ships and a number of national economic construction in key areas need steel material with high performance and low temperature performance of high strength and high toughness, weather resistance and excellent welding performance.

3. Modern Transportation Steel

Research on the steel of modern transportation facilities and key transportation equipment and other advanced varieties of steel materials which is imperative in major national construction projects, to meet the needs of high performance steel materials in automobiles, high-speed railways, transportation equipments, construction machinery and a number of key areas of national economic construction.

4. Advanced Energy Steel

Oriented national advanced energy development and key energy project construction needs, development of nuclear power and thermal power major equipment manufacturing, deep oil and gas exploitation, large - scale oil and gas pipeline construction in urgent needs of high - performance steel materials, studying on degradation of material structure and service safety under special service conditions.

Collaborative Innovation Center of Steel Technology(CICST) brings together the leaders of the steel industry and the backbone of the youth. At present, 214 R&D persons have been hired, including 6 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 7 professors of the Yangtze River Scholars Award Program by the Ministry of Education, 11 professors supported by “Outstanding Youth Science Fund”of National Natural Science Foundation of China, 7 professors supported by “Excellent Youth Science Funds” of National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 21 chief experts and researchers from steel companies.
