Overview

The University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) is committed to building itself into a high-level research-oriented university by attaching great importance to novel scientific research and promoting the ability of independent innovation. USTB is guided by the principle of the “Triple Three Policies”, which focuses on major national, regional and industrial needs and scientific frontiers. It has implemented the in-depth integration of production, teaching and research, while carrying out original innovation, technology integration, application practice and collaborative innovation. These center around the dominant specialties to continuously strengthen the ability to provide services for the key national strategies in China.

USTB is home to great R&D strength. It made the list of the World Top 500 Universities for the first time in the 2018 QS World University Rankings. According to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) data released on March 14, 2019, four disciplines, including materials, engineering, chemistry and computer science were ranked among the top 1% by ESI, with materials ranking the top 1% globally. According to the 2018 Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, USTB's metallurgical engineering department earned a global first place rating with mining engineering placing sixth. With the clustering development of metallurgical engineering disciplines with others, such as energy, environment, information and automation, a “new engineering” discipline system featuring “metallurgy plus” has been formed. In addition, the multi-disciplinary cross-integration of new strategic frontier disciplines, such as material gene, precision medicine, artificial intelligence and nano materials has continued to show great vitality.

Since1978 to the end of 2018, USTB has applied for 7812 patents, of which 4,630 have been authorized. More than 2000 scientific research achievements have been awarded at the national, provincial and ministerial levels, of which 176 have been awarded at the national level. In 1999, the Ministry of Education of China published the List of Major Achievements Achieved by Chinese Universities in the Fifty Years of Science and Technology, recognizing USTB's 12 major scientific research achievements, placing USTB among the top Chinese universities. According to statistics from the Ministry of Education, from 1978 to 2011, USTB won 4 first-class awards in the State Science and Technology Advancement Awards, ranking USTB 4th among Chinese universities.

USTB boasts a number of science research bases, including 1 National Science Center, 1 Collaborative Innovation Center of “Plan 2011”, 2 National Key Laboratories, 2 National Engineering (Technology) Research Centers, 2 National Science and Technology Infrastructure Platforms, 2 National International Science and Technology Cooperation Bases, and 50 Key Laboratories, Engineering Research Centers, International Cooperation Bases and Innovation Intelligence Introduction Bases at both provincial and ministerial levels. Among them, the National Center for Materials Service Safety (NCMS) is the first major national science and technology infrastructure project led by the university affiliated with the Ministry of Education.

USTB is continuously exploring more possibilities for social service and development. It has signed comprehensive cooperation agreements with more than 150 bodies ranging from local governments at district, municipal and provincial levels to large-scale enterprises and institutions. It has jointly established many innovative research centers and carried out major project cooperation with leading steel companies.

From 2016 to 2018, USTB undertook 13 National Key Research and Development Projects in China totaling, 291.85 million RMB in approved special funding. The funding has placed USTB 18th among Chinese universities.

In 2018, 190 projects won the support of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and two of them were approved as major NFSC projects. These projects earned an approved funding of 156 million RMB, ranking USTB first in the number of approved projects along with Tsinghua University, Peking University and University of Science and Technology of China.

In 2018, 7 scholars of USTB were selected into the 4th group of Leading Innovative Talents of Science and Technology of Ten Thousand Talent Program, ranking USTB 13th in the total number of scholars selected. 1 project was supported by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and 4 projects by the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars. Additionally, 1 scholar was the recipient of the Science and Technology Award for Chinese Youth. 5 scholars were selected into the Fourth Young Elite Scientists Sponsorship Program by CAST, ranking USTB 5th among the Chinese universities.

In 2018, USTB won 7 National Awards for Science and Technology, of which two were awarded with the second prize in the National Award for Natural Sciences simultaneously for the first time, one with the first prize in National Award for Science and Technology Progress and two with the second prize in National Award for Science and Technology Progress. Among them, three projects were completed by the First Principal Person of the First Principal Unit and the number of grants obtained ranked USTB 10th among domestic universities. In the same year, 63 provincial and ministerial scientific research awards were awarded to USTB.

In 2018, two papers completed by USTB scholars were published in top international journals, one on Science and the other on Nature. One scholar was the recipient of the 2019 Wills Rodney Whitney Award from the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE International).
